Crowns and Bridges
Restore Your Smile with Custom Crowns and Bridges
Is there a gap in your smile? One or more damaged or missing teeth can make it harder to feel confident in your smile or laughter and may interfere with speaking or chewing. Missing back teeth affect your chewing efficiency which leads to a multitude of other problems. Untreated, a missing tooth could cause those around it to change positions and disturbs the equilibrium between the other teeth. When you book your appointment, Amelia Street Dental Clinic can help you determine whether crowns and/or bridges can help restore the fullness of your smile or help restore and balance the chewing efficiency.

What are Crowns?
Dental crowns are single unit fixed prosthetic replacements which are cemented on to the existing tooth or dental implants.... They are fixed and make the tooth strong and help it function better. They are custom made and are designed as per the clinical requirement
How do crowns work?
The function of a crown is to cover or “cap” a damaged tooth or protect a tooth from future damage. It strengthens the tooth ... and helps improve the aesthetics, position, and the morphology (size and shape). A crown is also inserted on top of a dental implant to restore a missing tooth and make it functional. Usually, crowns are advised if more than 60% of the existing tooth is filled or broken down or decayed.
Materials used for Crowns
Porcelain or Ceramic is the most preferred material for fabrication of crowns. It is the most aesthetic and a exact shade match ... can be achieved. It gives a natural appearance. Metal free ceramics like Zirconia or Emax are the new norm. Crowns can also be done by using metal alloys of gold or Cobalt Chromium or Acrylic resins. Each have their own indications. Sometimes a combination of porcelain fused to metal (PFM) is used to fabricate a crown as it is considered stronger than a metal free ceramic crown.
Our Dentists are Amelia Street Dental Clinic may recommend a crown to:
• Replace a large filling when the existing tooth structure is insufficient.
• Protect a cracked tooth from fracturing....
• Restore a fractured to its normal shape and size.
• Protect and cap a root canal treated tooth (especially back teeth).
• Improve a discoloured or an oddly shaped tooth.
• Restore a dental implant.
• Be a part of a bridge
What is a Bridge?
If you are missing one or several teeth, you can replace them with a bridge. When you get a bridge, we provide you with ... two or more false teeth. The supporting teeth are called as abutments and the replaced missing tooth is called as a pontic. The pontic is attached to the abutments and the resultant prosthesis is called as a bridge. Bridges can be also fabricated on implants and is called as an implant supported bridge.
How do bridges work?
A bridge is advised or recommended to replace one or more missing teeth. The gaps
left by missing teeth cause the remaining ...
adjacent teeth to drift or tilt into the
empty spaces resulting in a poor bite and disturbance in the equilibrium. This
can potentially lead to loss of bone support of supporting teeth or gum disease
or even temporomandibular disorders.
Bridges are fixed by cementation to the supporting tooth or teeth or
implants.
Like crowns they can also be fabricated using the same materials as the crowns
our dentists will help you make a choice depending on the location, aesthetic
requirement, and functional load.
How are crowns and bridges made?
The tooth or teeth on which a crown or bridge is proposed is reduced in size or
shaped to accommodate the prosthesis so ...
that it will fit properly and satisfy all
the requirements of aesthetics, size, shape and function.
After shaping, the dentist will either take an impression or scan the
preparation and send it to the dental laboratory for fabrication. A shade
selection will be done at this stage. Occasionally, you may be required to go to
the dental laboratory for shade selection.
A provisional crown is fabricated by the dentist to protect the prepared teeth
till the final one is fabricated. This takes about 3 weeks.
The final crown or bridge is then cemented or bonded to the prepared teeth
depending on the material used to fabricate the bridge.
How long do crowns and bridges last?
Retrospective studies have shown that crowns and bridges can last for 7 years or
more. They can become loose or break. ...
To ensure longevity of a crown or bridge, you
need to practice meticulous oral hygiene. (brush, floss, rinse). The bridge will
fail or can lose it support if the supporting teeth or bone get damaged due to
dental disease.
Some precautions need to be taken: Avoid extremely hard or sticky food. Do not
open bottles with false teeth.
Do You Need a Bridge?
If you are missing anywhere from 1-4 teeth, a bridge may be appropriate. If you are missing more teeth and enough supporting ... teeth are not available, dentures may be more suitable.
